Yumi and the Nightmare Painter

Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanderson

Sanderson’s third secret project of 2023 is a delightful story about two broken people that find themselves in an extraordinary situation. Sanderson combines familiar tropes with exquisite imagery and interesting characters to show how these two persons that are lost in their own worlds manage to overcome their own internal struggles. Though there’s romance, it is light and measured, choosing to emphasize the emotional connection and friendship that is at the core of the relationship. There are themes of betrayal, blind obedience in religious settings, the purpose and nature of art, as well as the role of technology in society. Overall, it’s another solid entry in Sanderson’s catalog.
